PPC Ad Strategies: How to Prepare for the 2011 Holidays

Posted by Manish Pandey On Tuesday, 18 October 2011 0 comments

Wait, what? Our plans for holiday are already needed? Isn’t it still summer?

That’s right, it’s that time again planning for the holiday, and in the search marketing world there are just a few days that become critical to this whole process. Those days are Black Friday, Cyber Monday, Green Monday, and increasingly Free Shipping Day.

comscore-holiday-season-online-retail-spending

The comScore data above shows some of the growth in retail spending by each of these days. We’re talking about some staggering numbers. As a result, it’s critical to think about three main areas as you plan for November through the end of the year.

1. Keyword Research

Think through variations of keywords that people might be searching for. Are terms like “Black Friday shoe deals” right for what you have to offer? If so, it makes sense to add them to your keyword list; if not, build out your negatives.

Keyword CPC’s increase quickly. If you haven’t done the necessary keyword research, you may get caught with traffic you didn’t budget for. Two great tools are your historical search query reports and Google’s Insights for Search to gauge the volume bump.

2. Search Experience

Research shows that for Cyber Monday the purchases consumers are making are for things they weren’t planning on buying for more than 24 hours vs. Black Friday where purchases are a bit more planned out. This means that how you leverage keyword selection, ad copy, and landing page experiences will influence consumers to make purchases in real-time.

Some questions to ask yourself:

  • Are you cross-selling on your landing page, or within your site?
  • Are you leveraging ad copy that calls out the duration of your offers?
  • Are you using ad sitelinks, and map integrations to facilitate consumer choice and demand?
  • Do you have mobile specific campaigns that leverage click-to-call, or mobile optimized landing pages?
  • Do you have an inventory management process that will help you pull down ads, offers, or keywords when items are out of stock?

3. Impact to Offline

While this period is increasingly growing online, there is a direct correlation to offline sales. Consumers are looking for deals, and heading into stores.

You can see above the spike in offline sales on Black Friday. It's important to note that your search programs are key to driving awareness and research for these offline events.

This is even more important if you think about your mobile campaigns. This year is likely to be thebiggest ever for mobile traffic as people research while in store to validate they have the best deal. Consider optimizing or valuing store locator visits during these dates vs. simply online orders.

Black Friday deals

Posted by Manish Pandey On Sunday, 9 October 2011 0 comments
Everybody is waiting for the best deal to meet their desigers in this black friday 2011.Don’t forget that your neighborhood “Mom and Pop” stores may also offer Black Friday deals, not only the big box stores you see in the mall. Black Friday has become so popular that many stores participate. Check with your favorite stores to ask if they will have special offers for Black Friday and you may be pleasantly surprised to discover that they do have some great Cyber Monday Laptop Deals as well.

How can you get the very best Black Friday deals in 2011? That’s a trick question – because for everyone those Black Friday deals are going to be different. Where you could be looking for an iPad, someone else could be looking for children’s toys or jewelry. There are many shoppers out there on Black Friday, looking for those great bargains but not everyone is looking for exactly the same thing. In some ways this is a relief – just imagine if you were all looking for the same thing! It would be very challenging and so many would be disappointed.

Try to organize your Black Friday shopping and remember to anticipate crowds and to be patient. Shopping on Black Friday is not your typical day at a shopping mall. The crowds may be two or even three times as large as they usually are. Some shoppers decide to get to the shopping mall or store extra early. One of the biggest challenges with this is that you will arrive when many, many people do – right at the start. But one of the benefits is that you arrive in the beginning where all of the merchandise is out and available – and you’ll have the most opportunity to get those Black Friday deals you’ve been drooling over in 2011. Especially if you want one of those hot or latest gift ideas, arriving early could be a good idea.

Doing all of your Black Friday shopping in one shopping mall, store or location would make things more convenient if this is possible. Sometimes it is not, you really want to go several different places. Today you can easily research Black Friday circulars and see the bargains, often doing this online to find the very best deals days or weeks before Black Friday. Taking the time to do this can help you find exactly what you want and mean that you find the very best gifts for family and friends.

Does Apple Have Black Friday Sales?

Posted by Manish Pandey On Monday, 19 September 2011 0 comments

Black Friday is the biggest shopping day of the year. For many products, it is the best day of the year to buy them. This has many people speculating what will be the big deals of 2011. This is a hot subject for Apple products, as it has so many big fans out there that are waiting on pins and needles to see what hot, new Apples product, if any, will be sold for unbelievable prices on the 2011 Black Friday.

The iPod has always been a hot item for consumers, and this year it can be expected that this trend will continue. Traditionally, the iPod has been a bestseller during Black Friday, and in the coming months Apple will likely be introducing new models of the popular device. Part of the reason that this sleek device is so consistently a hot item is that it has come to be a major player in the mp3 domain. Since the manufacturer’s products are rarely price reduced, it means that the day is a big opportunity for folks interested in getting one of the devices the chance to get one at a great a really great discount. Using this day is a great shopping strategy to use to get one of the newer models. Generally speaking, retailers are not allowed to offer prices lower than the manufacturer’s standard price, but it is reasonable to expect that there will be bundled deals for free accessories and free iTunes cards. Sometime retailers will offer a gift card bundled with the purchase of an iPod. As in passed Black Fridays, consumers can expect that accessories will see a big price cut. Accessories include cases, headphones, alarm clocks, docking speaker systems, and automotive accessories.

One the questions abounding about this year are what kind of deals, if any, that buyers can look for in the iPad market. Usually, iPads do not receive much of any kind of discount during special sales days, but like other products it may still come with some bundled packages. Another rumor is that a newer, even slimmer model will be released prior to the big day. Since the market for laptops has not died, then it reasonable to assume that it will not die for the iPad. Sales strategies surrounding the device have to do more with releasing new versions and also satisfying supply and demand. In other words, if there is a ton of demand for the product, then prices are less likely to be touched. The trade-off means that there will be more of the device produced for shoppers. This is in contrast to when a product is given a sizeable discount but only so many models are put on the stands for buyers. Again, while one should not expect any significant price reduction on the iPad, there is rumor that it will be bundled as well with additional accessories or bundled with a gift card from the store selling it.

For this year, the iPhone will also be in high demand with buyers. Again, while sources predict that there will probably be no significant lowering of price for the iPhone, one can expect a new version to come out. For this year it will probably be the iPhone 5. Sources say this may be the most advanced design yet. The phone is said to have access to the 4G network for faster service, and it is also rumored to have a much larger cpu, which will make its processing power much more efficient. This device is always a major draw, and is equally in demand with the aforementioned products. Reports have it that the new design will also be sleeker and smaller and with improved network connection as well. It has not hit the shelves yet, and is rumored not to until the end of September, but this marketing strategy will put it in the position to be the first time consumers have been able to get the newest model on this biggest shopping day. It is a crafty marketing strategy that, while not price reduced in any substantial way, will make it more enticing to buy because it is the newest make. Like the previous products, it will likely come with some special bundles form the retail stores.

While most retailers aren’t offering specials for the aforementioned devices, if last year is any indication the Mac book may be an exception. Last year, there were some deep price reductions on Mac books with online retailers, with Amazon being one of the better ones. While in 2011 it is expected that, as usual, the manufacture will not offer any specials for their devices, including Mac books, it is expected that Amazon and other still will. Also, there are so many models now that, even if the shopper can not get the newest one, there are still a plethora of devices to choose from that will be available for some pretty amazing price reductions. It is well worth it to look at the older models for this reason. This time of the year is the best time to buy the systems, as they will not be at these prices again for the year. At least, that is the prediction. In cases where the price has not changed, as with all of the other products covered, there will likely be bundled specials as well. Again, these bundled buys are typically in the form of free accessories and/or retail store gift cards. All in all, the signs point to some amazing prices this year.
