dealnews.com put together a good piece on which retailers are the best online during Black Friday weekend.
Walmart and Target did not make the cut.
Who did?
The top five were selected based on the number of "EDITOR'S CHOICE" awards they received last year.
For instance a score of 33 "Editor's Choice" awards means they had 33 awesome deals online.
So who made the cut?
The Top Five Online Merchants for the Best Deals During Black Friday Weekend:
- Amazon: 132 Editors' Choice Deals
(40% of Amazon's total Black Friday Weekend deals)Surprised? The leader of our year-long deals list also takes the top spot here. The super-popular online retailer offered a grand total of 326 deals during the 5-day weekend, several of which were the ever-so-popular (and literally as fast as) Lightning Deals. (A whopping 49 Editors' Choice deals were posted on Black Friday alone.)
Among the most popular offerings were $2 MP3 album downloads (which even included Lady Gaga's latest release), a Nintendo DS Lite handheld console for $80 (and this was before Nintendo's retail price dropped to $100), and a Canon EOS Rebel T2i 18MP DSLR 2-lens bundle with additional accessories for just $799.
- Best Buy: 33 Editors' Choice Deals
(49% of Best Buy's total Black Friday Weekend deals)The Yellow Tag's Black Friday Weekend offerings don't quite total one-third of Amazon's total listings, but nearly half of Best Buy's deals were tagged with dealnews' top honor. Meanwhile, Best Buy appeared to take the "Early Bird" approach, as a majority of its Editors' Choice deals were published on Thanksgiving. (By comparison, only three such deals appeared on dealnews on Black Friday.)
Some of Best Buy's best included an all-time low for a Samsung 46" 1080p LCD HDTV / Blu-ray player bundle and a Barnes & Noble nook for $100 via in-store pickup (a best-ever price at the time). Best Buy's laptop offerings were especially notable, one example being a Samsung Core i3 2.13GHz 14" Blu-ray Laptop for $450.
- newegg: 31 Editors' Choice Deals
(27% of newegg's total Black Friday deals)The renowned electronics retailer, which was absent on our previous list, ranks third in terms of Editors' Choice deals, nipping at Best Buy's heels with 31 such offerings. newegg came on strong on Black Friday with 12 Editors' Choice listings, while six were featured on Cyber Monday.
For the consumer who doesn't shy away from rebates, newegg had some particularly compelling offers. Some of the most notable deals from the 'egg included a Patriot 16GB microSDHC card ($9 after a $10 rebate — we still haven't seen such a card for less), an HP OfficeJet 4500 Wireless All-In-One Printer for $50 (which tied OfficeMax's Black Friday deal for the non-wireless version), and a Zalmon Athlon 3GHz Quad-Core HTPC Barebones Kit for $523 after a combined $35 in rebates (which was half off the best price available elsewhere).
- Kohl's: 26 Editors' Choice Deals
(55% of Kohl's total Black Friday Weekend deals)Kohl's boasted the best "Editors' Choice to total deal" ratio than any other merchant. (This was the case with our last list, too.) Stackable sitewide coupons for 20% off and free shipping yielded many all-time lows for apparel and housewares. (And like newegg, Kohl's was also rebate-happy.)
For example, Kohl's had a Rival 5-quart crockpot for just $6 shipped after coupons and rebate, the best we've seen for any such crockpot by $10. Also available was a 5-piece luggage set for $28 after applicable discounts (although, even without the rebate, it still would have been an all-time low for a 5-piece luggage set by a buck). The cheapest iRobot Roomba vacuum we've ever seen was courtesy of the Kohl's Black Friday sale, which offered the 400 model for just $80 (sans rebate).
- Dell Home: 25 Editors' Choice Deals
(43% of Dell's total Black Friday Weekend deals)Dell's consumer storefront boasted an admirable amount of Editors' Choice listings throughout Black Friday Weekend. And no, they weren't limited to laptops and desktops. Dell Home provided significant price lows on other coveted consumer electronics, such as HDTVs, cameras, and gaming consoles. Most of Dell's Editors' Choice deals came on Cyber Monday (10), more than any other day.
Examples of Dell Home's best deals were a Nintendo Wii Limited Edition Red Console for $160 (which undercut Amazon's offer by $40), an all-time low for a Dell 20" LED-backlit LCD monitor (at $85; we've since seen other brands for slightly less), and a Vizio 55" 1080p LCD HDTV for $888 (a then-low for any name-brand TV of that class). Computers weren't forgotten, however, as Dell offered some significant markdowns on its systems (including a refurbished Alienware M11x Core 2 Duo 1.3GHz 12" Laptop for $499).
BlackFridaySales.com announced their Black Friday 2011 predictions for online shopping with total sales to increase by over 24% from 2010 earlier today. According to comScore, Black Friday shoppers spent $648 million online in 2010 which means they are expecting over $800 million for Black Friday 2011.
Online shopping has definitely made life easier for everyone. Not only does it save the hassle of visiting retail stores and risking exposure to Black Friday injuries but also preserves your privacy for buying personal items like acne treatment and anything that comes wrapped in a brown box.
However, with a global economic meltdown looming (it’s actually already here but everyone is in denial), unemployment at high levels and access to credit stricter than ever before, will Black Friday 2011 be all it’s cracked up to be? The new Apple iPhone 4s has great reviews but maybe if they called it Apple iPhone 5 it would sell another trillion units. Who knows for sure.
Black Friday is the mother of all measurements for retailers forecasting holiday and year-end sales but has America gone a little crazy with their spending when teachers barely get paid enough to live, many families are one hospital visit away from bankruptcy and Congress members cannot agree on anything. It’s unrealistic to think of this as a perfect world but maybe one day someone will create a "give to charity" day where people get just as excited about helping others as they do for a new pair of shoes.
Thanksgiving is for family and a day we all should cherish however it seems that too is now changing and becoming pre-occupied with "early" Black Friday sales. There is no doubt everyone has some family issues and once the turkey is gone it’s easy to wish a store was open, but really, do we need more activities that require a credit card to have fun?
Full HD TVs also known as 1080p TVs are have definitely arrived in the mainstream. While we still will see most bargain Black Friday TV deals feature HD Ready (720p) TVs, we will see much more 1080p TV deals compared to last year.
Last Black Friday the $198 32-inch Emerson HDTV from Walmart was the best bargain Black Friday TV deal. This was a 720p TV with 60Hz. The sweet spot for full HD TVs is a size around 40-inch. The best full HD TV deal on Black Friday 2010 was from Target. They offered the 40-inch Westinghouse VR4085DF 1080p HDTV for $298.
$298 is the base mark you should keep in mind when looking for 1080p HDTV deals. At these low prices of course you just get a TV without all the bells and whistles that more expensive TVs offer today including Internet and 3D.
1080p HDTVs also just make sense if you have a full HD media source like a Sony PS3, Blu-ray player or full HD TV service.
Because many consumers still do not need full HD, the most Black Friday TV deals feature still 720p TVs. The currently bestselling TV on Amazon is also a 720p Television. The Panasonic VIERA TC-L32C3 32-inch 720p HDTV sells for $313.72.
I predict that we will see several 40-inch 1080p HDTV priced under $350 this year. The $298 Target 1080p deal was the exception last year. Most 1080p 40-inch TVs sold for around $400.
Black Friday can mean major savings when it comes to holiday shopping, but there are deals to be had that don’t involve waking up in the wee hours the morning after Thanksgiving and battling the crowds. The November 2011 issue of ShopSmart magazine, from the publisher of Consumer Reports, has a step-by-step guide to finding the best Black Friday sales without all the runaround.
“Multiplying deal deadlines can put a lot of pressure on shoppers leading up to Black Friday,” said Lisa Lee Freeman, editor-in-chief of ShopSmart. “With our five Black Friday shopping tips, people can avoid the pressure that would otherwise lead them to make irrational purchases and waste a lot of money.”
Start now
Thanks to “holiday creep” – the same phenomenon that puts Christmas decorations in stores before you’ve finished eating your Halloween candy – you can probably grab some Black Friday-style deals now. Last year, JCPenney, Sears, Staples, Target, Walmart, and others advertised big sales – some offering as much as 50 percent off – starting even before Halloween. So look online for info about preholiday sales.

While Black Friday 2011 will technically fall on November 25th, right after Thanksgiving weekend, as we've seen from the past months you can expect retailers to begin offering Black Friday deals starting October 28, essentially turning Black Friday into Black November.
And as we've also seen in the past, the best Black Friday deals are always available before Black Friday, with November 25th usually being the last day where retailers may further cut down prices of popular electronics if they are still in inventory.
So what can you expect from Black Friday 2011 this year? Last year, we saw HDTVs crash to unbelievably low prices. This year however it looks like some popular products may be on their way out and Black Friday will be the perfect farewell. Now we're not talking about the BlackBerry PlayBook although we're hoping to see it crash to $99 in November. We're instead talking about the Nintendo Wii.
Black Friday 2011 Prediction: Nintendo Wii only $99
With the Nintendo Wii U expected to roll out in 2012, all eyes are on the current Nintendo Wii stock to be cleared out. And the target price here is $99. We're keeping our fingers crossed folks.

Having covered Black Friday extensively for the past eight years, the expert deal hunters at GottaDeal.com are in a better position than nearly anyone else to offer predictions for Black Friday 2011. Over the years they’ve noticed trends in the deals offered by the major retailers and can offer a glimpse into what they believe will be the most popular deals and hottest items. They’ll also give you some predictions for the actual prices consumers will see these items selling at this Black Friday based on their research along with some general holiday shopping predictions for this year.
Holiday Shopping
Last year continued the trend of down years for many retailers, both traditional and online. This holiday season including Black Friday is shaping up to be an important final opportunity for retailers to make up for the lackluster sales they’ve had the rest of the year.
While GottaDeal.com likely won’t begin to see a steady stream of actual Black Friday ads until the middle of October, they are predicting that while retailers will try to boost sales with their Black Friday ads, the actual deals will likely be very similar to last year. As has happened in the last couple of years, they expect the deals overall to lack that “wow” factor that the sale ads had 4 to 5 years ago. While there were some nice deals last year, going by sales figures as well as the opinions of the die-hard Black Friday shoppers on their message boards, most stores failed to get consumers excited. They’re also expecting stock levels to be slightly down from last year, as retailers don’t want to stock as much product with uncertainty clouding the shopping season. Therefore it may be more important than ever to get in line earlier to score the best deals.
One trend that will continue is the extension of Black Friday from one day into a prolonged period of sales. Again this year there were several major national retailers that had “Black Friday in July” sales earlier this year. These sales were not really comparable to the regular Black Friday sales, but the trend of using the term “Black Friday” for sales that aren’t specifically on November 25th will likely continue as retailers pull out all the stops to get people in the stores. A trend that started a few years ago that GottaDeal.com expects to continue is for stores to have a few Black Friday-level deals in their weekly ads beginning as early as October, and some will likely reference Black Friday in some way to draw interest. But the hottest deals and the largest number of them will still be on the actual Black Friday, as always.
With Black Friday being exactly a month from Christmas, retailers will have to get consumers shopping earlier rather than counting on Black Friday and the few remaining weekends in December to provide most of their sales. Online retailers, and brick & mortar retailers with e-commerce sites have the advantage here as they can quickly prepare and promote online sales leading up to Black Friday. These sales are fully covered on GottaDeal.com. They also predict that stores will once again heavily embrace social networking this year as a part of their strategy for the holiday season. Look for exclusive deals and contests to appear on stores’ Facebook pages and Twitter accounts. Expect several stores to give sneak peeks of their Black Friday ad via these means as well, although they may be beatento it and have their ad already posted on GottaDeal.com.
Looking at at specific items that should prove to be popular this year:
HDTVs
HDTVs have been popular Black Friday items in the past few years, and GottaDeal.com expects that this holiday season will be another big year as prices have continued to drop since last year. 3D TVs have been on the market long enough that consumers may finally start seeing some deep discounts on older 3D models on Black Friday this year.
With HDTVs, quality can vary greatly from the cheaper to the more expensive units. In many cases, the lowest-priced models on Black Friday are stripped-down models lacking some of the “bells and whistles” of the higher priced versions. That doesn’t necessarily mean that these deals aren’t great, just that consumers should be aware of what they are buying and have realistic expectations for the performance they’ll get out of it.
GottaDeal.com fully expects to see the cheapest 42″ LCD HDTVs in the $249 to $299 range this year. During the last few months on GottaDeal.com, they’ve posted deals for 42″ HDTVs for as low as $349, so it’s completely realistic to expect deals in Black Friday ads for under $300 on a lower-quality model. These cheaper HDTVs will likely be 720p and will lack features found in more expensive models.
While Black Friday is a great time to buy the loss-leader, lower-end HDTVs, for consumers looking for a deal on a higher quality, name-brand HDTV, the best time to buy is typically in early to mid-December as retailers ramp up the deals to get those last minute sales before the holidays. And even if consumers miss those deals, the pre-Super Bowl TV deals are also very attractive.
Laptops, Netbooks & Tablets
One of the biggest hot Black Friday ad items traditionally has been the ultra-cheap laptop. The recent surge in popularity of tablets has taken sales away from traditional laptops, but the bargain-basement laptop is still the quintessential Black Friday deal. Desktop computers, while still popular, are not as “sexy” as they’ve been in the past. They have become almost disposable because of price drops and the fact that it doesn’t take much in terms of features to handle what 99% of the general public uses a desktop for in their daily lives.
If consumers are considering purchasing a laptop or netbook on Black Friday this year, GottaDeal.com can’t stress enough how important it is to decide what features they need and what they will be using the computer for. There will be cheap laptops, but if they don’t fit their needs, as good of a deal they may seem on the surface, most will end up disappointed soon after they purchase it.
The “classic” Black Friday laptop the last few years has had a 15.6″ widescreen LCD display, a dual-core processor, 3GB to 4GB of memory, 320GB to 500GB hard drive and DVD burning drive, along with standard features such as WiFi, modem and ethernet port. Laptops like these have been available all year long from retailers such as Best Buy, Dell and Staples for as low as $299. Therefore GottaDeal.com predicts consumers will see this level of laptop in Black Friday ads for around $199 this year.
GPS Systems
GPS navigation systems were huge several years ago during Black Friday, but since then as most consumers interested in them have bought one, they aren’t in demand like they used to be. Prices have continued to drop as new models have been released with incremental feature upgrades such as updated maps, traffic and weather capability and improved, larger displays.
Deals have been posted all year long on GottaDeal.com for GPS systems well below $100 and therefore they expect to see a budget GPS system with 3.5″ LCD display for $29 to $39 this year on Black Friday, and more name-brand, feature-loaded models from the manufacturers just mentioned for $80-100. Larger models with 5″ displays and lifetime traffic and maps service should be around $129 this year. A best bet is too look for a model with lifetime traffic and map updates as they won’t have the need to pay every few years to get the latest maps. A 4.3” model with these features could be had this year for as low as $99.
Video Games
Video games should be given a lift this Black Friday thanks to some highly anticipated new games. The recent price cut on the Nintendo 3DS will likely translate into deep discounts on the older models such as the DSi, DS Lite and others. Expect low prices or bundles with free games and accessories.
The Nintendo Wii will be an interesting item this year. With the new Wii U scheduled to be released next year, retailers may want to begin clearing stock of the current Wii Console. Expect deals such as a Wii bundled with a $50 gift card for $149 this holiday season.
Popular games being released this fall should also help sales, although deals for these new games will not be easy to find. Instead, expect promotions such as free accessories, gift cards, point cards or other items with the purchase of selected newer games. Deals on older video game titles will be very good this year as the current set of consoles matures. Look for “greatest hits” games for all major consoles to be on sale in the $10-15 range.
Additional Hot Items
As for what will be hot this year, it’s always tough to say. It’s likely going to be a combination of the items such as laptops & tablets, HDTVs, toys, video games and home items. With the economy still down, many households are looking to improve their home rather than spend money on vacations or other expenditures. Therefore we expect those items such as appliances, kitchen items, lawn & garden, furniture and bedding to be popular. Many shoppers will be looking to save money on the “basics” and that will likely be reflected in the deals shown in the ads this year.
Online Black Friday Deals
The experts at GottaDeal.com can’t stress enough that to get the best deals on Black Friday or any other day of the year, you have to check online first. At GottaDeal.com they post hundreds of new online deals each week and their forum members post even more every day on the message boards. On Black Friday @ GottaDeal.com, they’ll have a continuously updated list of Black Friday ad items that can be purchased online at Black Friday ad prices. Look for this list in mid-November. They urge their visitors to order as many ad items as possible online before leaving the house. It’ll save time, hassle and space in the trunk.
They do expect online retailers to continue to offer amazing deals this quarter as well as they compete with the brick and mortar retailers. Expect big sales and online-only coupons from retailers such as Amazon.com, Overstock.com, Buy.com, Walmart.com, Dell.com and many, many others. And to keep track of these deals, just bookmark the home page at GottaDeal.com where they’ll keep you updated on the latest deals throughout the day, every day of the year.
GottaDeal.com is dedicated to save consumers money in all aspects of their daily lives. In addition to a year-round online deals site and a large, active community forum, each year GottaDeal.com has a dedicated Black Friday site focused on providing advanced looks at the Black Friday sale ads from national retailers as well as the hottest online holiday sales.
Black Friday Camping
Dev Shapiro, known as bigjimslade on the GottaDeal.com Forums, is a long-time Black Friday camping veteran. Most years Dev spends days camped out at a local Best Buy store with a group of friends. In this article, he gives his tips and suggestions for having a successful Black Friday camping experience. See the end of the article for ways you can have any of your Black Friday camping questions answered.
Introduction to Black Friday Camping
Black Friday camping is not like camping at a state park or KOA campground. You will usually be camping in the concrete jungle of a big box store or shopping mall parking lot. You will need to pack items for as many days as you will be out there. Please keep in mind this article is general set of guidelines and you will need to tailor this list for the area you live in, especially taking into account the weather forecast and well as the local city codes. For example, some cities do not allow tents or other shelter in retail areas and some health codes do not allow you to use a camp stove or BBQ. Learn what you can and can't bring before you leave the house.
Before You Camp
Before you drag all of your camping gear out of storage you should keep a few things in mind. When you know where you will want to camp you should contact the manager at the store or shopping mall that you will be camping at. See if there are any special restrictions and find out where you should start the line. In situations where you have a store in a shopping center, it is typically private property and the store rents the space. Some shopping centers and retail centers do not allow tents. Your store manager will know the rules, so just ask. After you get the OK from the store manager then I suggest you get your gear and set it up on your front lawn. Check to see if everything works and is in good shape for your upcoming adventure.
Shelter
Shelter is highly recommended for many reasons. I would recommend a tent. This will help you keep out of the wind and store your equipment like coolers, chairs and food. A tent is easy to set up and break down. You will need the type of tent that requires no stakes. On these type of tents, the corners will have a key at the end and will fit into the tent poles. A good tent will shelter you from the cold and wind and will make the experience much more tolerable.
Seating
Seating is another important factor to consider when Black Friday camping. You will be sitting a lot and therefore you will need and appreciate a comfy camp chair. I would recommend a chair that is comfy, has a back to it and folds up easily when you are done with it.
Coolers
You may be thinking: it's November and not July, so why do I need to have a cooler? You will need to have a cooler to keep drinks and food fresh. Even though it is not 100 degrees you need to keep hydrated. Leave the sodas and beer at home and bring a lot of water and non carbonated drinks. I would recommend two coolers. One for drinks and one for food.
Heat
Before I get into this subject please remember to put your safety first. Obey all local laws and never have any type of heating device or open flame inside tents. If you live in a cold weather area of the country, having a portable source of heat is a must. For many years I have been using a heater from Coleman. It is a catalytic heater that runs off of propane. I always make sure I have around 6 bottles of propane on hand for each heater for every 12 hours. In my camp I have a total of 4 heaters. For your body you will need hand warmers that you need to put on your gloves. Frostbite is nasty and not fun.
Food & Cooking
Most local laws and health codes do not allow you to cook in the open. That includes camp stoves and BBQs. The way my group handles food and meals is simple: we pack all of our snacks and light food items into a cooler and for dinner we plan ahead where someone in our group will pick up food. Before you camp you should know the area well so you'll know where the nearest food sources and restrooms are. If you did not do that or still need ideas use mobile apps like Yelp and Foursquare. Remember, most restaurants are closed or close early on Thanksgiving Day. Also if you are camping over several days make it fun and have a theme night. One night have Indian and another Asian and so on. While we are on the subject of food and drink, I suggest that you bring your own trash bags and find a way to dispose of your trash.
Clothing
You can always layer up but can't strip down all the way. Since the weather and climate is different all over the country you should be smart when selecting your clothing and take in account on the number of days you will be outside. I have found long johns, a nice coat that breathes well and gloves work well. Keep in mind that you need to protect your ears, nose, fingers and toes from frostbite. You will also need a lot of hand warmers.
Personal Items & Staying Connected
You should limit the personal items you take when you camp for Black Friday. This way you wont have to worry about them during the rush of Black Friday and getting into the store. I bring my wallet, cell phone, my Black Friday ads, notebook, a book to read and a laptop. Staying connected is very important when you camp out. GottaDeal.com gets Black Friday news and updates hourly during the week of Black Friday. Stores have been known to release special and hidden sales. If you are going to be camping out for a day or less you don’t have to worry too much about staying charged. But if you are going to be out there for more than a day, I would suggest buying a power inverter. A power inverter will allow you to charge your laptops and cell phones with your vehicle’s battery. You can buy one at Radio Shack or online.

One of the most popular regional stores in USA, Fred’s Hometown Discount Store Inc. will more likely, yet again offer us a bargain for this season of Black Friday.
Fred’s Store is a regional chain of discount retail stores which is especially present on the southeastern part of America and in some extend into the Midwest. It operates about 700 stores and 300 pharmacies in 15 states.
Fred’s Store is especially popular in: Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee It is well known in the smaller towns and focuses on following great discount margins for consumers. You will be able to find great deals all around the year, but for Black Friday 2011 you will be able to discover some truly amazing deals.
The most anticipated probable deal for Black Friday 2011 at the Fred’s Inc. will most probably be the under $100 HDTV. Besides this, you might also find a DVD or a VCR combo offer for less than $50. And this statement comes based on last year discount sale for Magnavox DVD Player and VCR Combo which was found at $34.95.
Following this, you will also be able to find some great deals for popular toys which will most likely make great gifts for Christmas for any child. There is a high possibility that you will be able to find great deals for $10 or even for $5, but you will need to dedicate a bit of time to search through the offers.
Besides this, you will also be able to find great offers for home appliance such as vacuum cleaners, toasters, microwave ovens or coffee makers at, yet again, prices under $50. And this is because during the previous Black Friday we have found the Dirt Devil Vacuum Cleaner for $24.95 and the Continental Digital Coffee Maker for $10.
And if you want to get the best deals for Black Friday 2011 at Fred’s Store as well as any other store, you should do a bit of research to see if it is the best of deals and if it will offer you what you desire to the fullest once you have purchased it. It is better to pay more, if you need some features and it is better to see if there aren’t other products which will give you the same functions at a much lower price.
