HP has officially closed the doors on the Palm webOS retail stores for the last time. Yup, the stores have officially gone out of business. And while this may come as little surprise for some, we suspect that it may come as a big shocker for some.
You see, for those who think this news was expected and comes with little surprise — you must have fallen into the category of people that knew these stores existed in the first place. And for those who think this news was surprising — we suspect the surprising part was not that these stores were closing down, but that they actually existed.
But regardless if you knew about the Palm webOS retail stores or not, they are gone and will not be coming back. And while we are unsure how many visitors these stores received in their final days, we can say that those who ventured in were greeted with some over-the-top deals. Well, over-the-top assuming you don’t mind buying hardware that is running a mobile operating system that has a not all that certain future.
Anyway, those who found themselves in-store were greeted with deals such as $50 Veer 4G smartphones as well as Touchstone charging docks for $2.50. In addition, the Pixi was being sold for $25. And for those who felt the need to buy multiple Pixi smartphones, there was a volume discount that dropped the price down to $15 each if you bought four or more. Otherwise, for those still feeling like they missed out on the fire-sale priced TouchPad — rest assured in knowing that the stores were not selling the tablet.
With that, while this guy expected this, I will say that as a long time Palm user — it comes with some sadness to see them go. Of course, that being said, the Palm name died quite a while back so really — there is no need for sadness over this.
